    A bit of history

In 2011 the National Sports Policy was adopted by Government

The purpose of the policy was –

“To institute a clear and manageable framework to guide and enhance the delivery of sports programmes in Fiji through a coordinated and partnership approach at all levels of participation by government, statutory and community governing bodies to ensure maximum return.”

The Guidelines of the policy included that –

“A National Sports Commission is to be set up to establish higher standards of excellence in all sports delivery systems. It should ensure that only athletes who are competitive internationally will receive funds for overseas competition, greater accountability of all sporting bodies and help eliminate conflicts of interest currently practiced by some federations. Future planning and greater accountability of federations and sporting bodies should be enforced by the Commission recognizing that individual sports federations are bound by rules and regulations of their international federations.”

The FIJI NATIONAL SPORTS COMMISSION DECREE 2013 (Decree No. 5 of 2013) was signed by the President of Fiji in January 2013.

“TO ESTABLISH THE FIJI NATIONAL SPORTS COMMISSION IN ORDER TO GUIDE AND ENHANCE THE DELIVERY OF SPORTS PROGRAMMES IN FIJI THROUGH A COORDINATED APPROACH AT ALL LEVELS OF PARTICIPATION BY GOVERNMENT, STATUTORY BODIES AND THE COMMUNITY AND TO ENSURE THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPORTS IN FIJI AND FOR RELATED MATTERS.”

In February 2013 the Minister of Youth and Sports appointed the first Board of the Commission tasked to set up the Fiji National Sports Commission.

The Board of the Commission is made up of the Permanent Secretaries of Sports and Finance, representatives of the Sports Council, the business community and of the National sporting organisations.

Government provided funding to establish the operations, set up a main office and to employ an experienced team to guide all of the programs tasked of the Commission under the Decree.

Sports Grant funding previously available through the Ministry were now to be distributed through the new Commission.

Initially the task was undertaken by a team of three. The Commission renovated the old Sports Development House in the FSC complex and established the Main office.

In 2013, Management, Sports Development, finance, and office staff were appointed and trained.

The Commission hosted the first NSO Conference and with the majority of Sporting bodies in attendance the discussions, gave the Commission direction and led to formulation of its first Strategic Plan and Development plan. The NSO Conference is now an annual event.

In the first year the Sports Development structure and plans were put in place and five rural week long “Outreach” programs were conducted. The urban “Give it a go” programs were introduced.

Partnerships were formed with a number of NSO’s who contributed to, and participated in the various development programs.

Satellite offices in the West, Lautoka and in the North, Labasa have been established and staffed. This has led to the introduction of a number of additional development programs such as the “Educate the Educator”, “Wellness” and “Kids sports” programs.
