FIJI TABLE TENNIS HOSTS WORLD EVENT A total of 150 young visitors from 42 countries from around 6 continents are expected to converge at the Vodafone Arena for the upcoming 2017 World Cadet Challenge. Our visitors are here to play table tennis from the 21st to the 29th of next month. Fiji Table Tennis President Mr Anthony Ho said the World Cadet Challenge is one of the premier events in world table tennis and brings to Fiji the best Under 15 players from each of the 6 continents as well as a World Hopes Under 12 team and a composite Fiji-Pacific Island team. “The current World/Olympic champions and the immediate past World/Olympic champions are products of the World Cadet Challenge as well as many of the top players in the world today,” Mr Ho said. “The event also brings about greater unity and understanding between our young people of the world through the training camp as well through interaction at the social and competition level.” Mr Ho added their slogan ‘Building the Next Generation of Champions’ aptly describes these young group of participants, their coaches and the officials who will also be ambassadors for the whole world not only in table tennis but in being good human role models and as ambassadors for a better world in terms of peace, friendship, respect, environment and social justice. “With 42 countries in attendance as either players, coaches, managers, technical officials and international delegates, this is by far the most diverse representation for any sporting event in Fiji,” he said. Fiji Table Tennis and its stake holders have been preparing for this event since February 2016 when Fiji Table Tennis attended the 2016 ITTF AGM in Malaysia during the 2016 World Table Tennis Championships to bid for the event against some of the powerhouses of table tennis. This was immediately during the aftermath of Cyclone Winston that we were able to bring to the 222 member countries of the ITTF. “At the announcement of Fiji as the host, we stood proudly in front of the world table tennis assembly showing that even a minority sport in Fiji could make a major impression to the world at large,” Mr Ho said. “Since then we have managed to let the world see table tennis in Fiji at the Rio Olympics and the Rio Paralympics.” Matches will be livestreamed on Youtube to the rest of the world and will also be broadcasted on FBCTV including a daily 5 minute highlight.
